Museum of Contemporary Art
As the installation designer, I was expected to:
Manage show budget and resources, including the allocation of resources to meet install goals
Collaborate across departments (curatorial/conservation/director/engineering), and gather all demands/feedback to create a single vision
Create and maintain project roadmaps to ensure alignment with museum goals and objectives
Install art according to best practices in collaboration with the conservation department
Simone Forti is a performance artist that works with dance and movement. Forti’s sculptures facilitate different types of dances, but are built minimally in order to enhance the dances. My initial design was approved by all stakeholders: engineers, artist, curator, conservators and the director. The unique challenge of this piece was the technical design of the structure. Previous installs had the ropes hanging from the ceiling. Our gallery has 40-foot skylights and no structures to hang things from. I had to design something that was solid enough to hold three to five people, but was not so big that it took away from the simplicity of the art. Below you can see the photoshop mock up and the final install.

Anicka Yi
Anicka Yi is a conceptual artist whose work lies at the intersection of fragrance, cuisine, and science. She is known for installations that engage the senses, especially the sense of smell, and for her collaborations with biologists and chemists. Some of the unique challenges of this install were:
-Researching previous work and materials in order to replicate piece
-Designing a mock up within larger group show
Larry Bell
One of the best parts of working in a large art institute is getting to work with your favorite artists. I love Larry Bell’s work and he was truly a delightful and kind person. Known for his cubes that are custom made for each installation, as they have to be assembled in place, Larry Bell is often grouped with the light and space movement as his pieces emphasize and reflect their environment.
These cubes really elevated the outdoor entrance to M.O.C.A. This was a surprisingly simple installation, but as any install goes, it was a learning experience. Some of the unique challenges for this install were:
-Coordinating delivery with the city of LA (street has to be partially shut down so truck can deliver glass)
-Sharing mock-ups and plans with city planners and engineers to make sure it is up to code
